Japrocksampler #1
I’m reading the amazing book Japrocksampler from that extraordinary writer (apart from his skills as a musician and drug addicted) named Julian Cope. The former leader of the Teardrop Explodes wrote a fascinating epic about Japanese rock and the music vanguard from that country, with a really powerful style and a huge amount of references, which could be even excessive, since it’s difficult to follow the hullabaloo with names of musicians and bands.
Until now, I got up to the ‘70s, and surfing on the web I found a lot of videos from the Group Sounds (the sixties Japanese pop-rock’n roll) times, most of them from spy films which Cope mentions as one of the main means of circulation for Asian rockers.
The one which follows is one of the most interesting, musically speaking, and the film seems to be also funny. For the other genres covered by the book, new posts will follow with time.
Sto leggendo il bellissimo libro Japrocksampler di quello straordinario scrittore (oltre che musicista e tossicomane) che è Julian Cope. L’ex leader dei Teardrop Explodes ha scritto un’appassionante epopea del rock giapponese e dell’avanguardia musicale nipponica nelle sue varie forme, con uno stile davvero potente e una serie di riferimenti perfino eccessiva, visto che è difficile seguire la sarabanda di nomi di gruppi e musicisti.
Finora sono arrivato agli anni ’70, e cercando sul web ho trovato diversi video del periodo Group Sounds (il pop-rock’n roll giapponese dei sixties), molti dei quali tratti dai film di spionaggio che lo stesso Cope cita come uno dei principali veicoli di diffusione per i rockers asiatici.
Quello che segue è uno dei più interessanti musicalmente, e anche il film sembra divertente. Per gli altri generi trattati nel libro, seguiranno nuovi post.
